www.unisa.ac.za Online Application 2025 Guide

If you’re planning to study at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 2025, it’s important to understand how the online application process works.

UNISA is South Africa’s largest distance-learning university, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications.

This guide will help you through the application steps, deadlines, and requirements, based on official information from UNISA.

When can I apply for admission to UNISA for 2025?

Applications for admission to limited undergraduate qualifications for the 2025 academic year are open from 14 April to 9 May 2025.

This period applies to first-time applicants, returning students changing qualifications, and those who previously applied but were not offered a space.

Who needs to apply for admission?

You must apply for admission if you:

  • Are a first-time UNISA applicant.
  • Are a returning student changing to a new qualification or specialisation.
  • Previously applied for admission and were not offered a space or did not register after being offered a space.
  • Are completing a higher certificate or any other program and wish to continue with further undergraduate studies.

All applications must be submitted during the prescribed application period.

How do I apply online at www.unisa.ac.za?

To apply online for admission to UNISA:

  1. Visit the UNISA website at www.unisa.ac.za.
  2. Click on “Apply for admission” and select “Undergraduate qualifications”.
  3. Follow the steps provided:
    • Check if Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) is suitable for you.
    • Ensure you meet the admission requirements for your chosen qualification.
    • Prepare your supporting documents.
    • Submit your application online.

Make sure to have a valid email address and cellphone number, as UNISA will communicate with you during the application process using these contact details.

What documents do I need to apply?

When applying, you need to upload the following documents:

  • A certified copy of your school qualifications (e.g., Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate).
  • A certified copy of your official tertiary academic record(s) (if applicable).
  • A certified copy of your ID document (for South African citizens) or passport (for international applicants).
  • Proof of payment of the application fee (if applicable).

Ensure that all documents are clear and legible.

What are the admission requirements?

Admission requirements vary depending on the qualification.

Generally, you need to meet the statutory and college admission requirements for your chosen qualification.

For example, to be admitted to a bachelor’s degree, you must have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with degree endorsement.

If you do not meet the requirements, consider applying for a lower-level qualification, such as a higher certificate, which can provide access to a degree.

How will I know if my application was successful?

After submitting your application, UNISA will assess your application and inform you of the outcome.

If your application is successful, you will receive an offer to study.

You must accept or decline the offer within the prescribed period. Note that you may only accept one offer.

If you accept an offer, any other application for admission or offer will automatically fall away.

What happens after I accept an offer?

Once you accept an offer, you may register for the qualification and specialization for which you received the offer.

Registration for the 2025 academic year for undergraduate qualifications, honours degrees, and postgraduate diplomas (including CTA) is open from 8 January to 28 February 2025 for semester modules, and until 31 March 2025 for year modules.

Can international students apply?

Yes, international students can apply to study at UNISA.

If you obtained your qualifications outside South Africa, you must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

You may apply for admission without a SAQA certificate of evaluation, but if your application is accepted, you must submit your SAQA certificate by 15 December 2025.
